On Sunday we began Holy Week with a Palm Sunday procession held within the abbey church, the first time for some years the weather has kept us from an outdoor procession. The Mass was no less worthy, with the choir in fine voice, the Knights of Malta processing with us in their robes as well providing four excellent servers for the Mass, and Archbishop Mario Conti concelebrating and taking the part of Christ in the solemn reading of the Passion. The new sound system was shown to be an excellent investment.

During the Triduum we will be continuing the recently restored tradition of chanting in Latin the Lamentations at matins; on Good Friday Fr Alban will sing a Roman chant version, and on Holy Saturday Fr Hugh will sing a version from a codex from the Escorial in Madrid.

Last night, at 1.51 am, the remaining half of the eucalyptus tree near the monks’ garden pond, fell down with a mighty crack, a victim of a raging gale. The other half itself was felled by a gale last year.
