Douai Abbey: The Monastery of St Edmund, King & Martyr

It has been a hectic few weeks and updates have taken a back seat. A catch-up with news follows:

» On 9 November, the abbot headed up north, first to Scarisbrick, where the presbytery is being removated, and then on to Ormskirk. He returned with some of Fr Boniface’s personal items. Fr Boniface is now permanently resident at Douai.

» The next day the abbot returned to Douai via Stafforshore, where he chaired the Oulton Abbey Trust meeting.

» On 13-15 November, the abbot visited Fr Alban at the Catholic Chaplaincy in the University of Cambridge. He celebrated Mass and preached to full congregation in the chapel on Remembrance Sunday.

» On 16 November, the abbot celebrated pontifical Mass for the staff and students of St Edmund’s College, Ware, on the feast of St Edmund of Abingdon, the college’s patron. About 600 attended and the saint’s relic was venerated.

» On 19 November, the abbot was present at St James’s, Spanish Place, in London at the solemn profession as a Knight of Malta. by Richard Berkeley-Matthews.

» The next day was the patronal feast of St Edmund, King and Martyr. Mass was at noon and the organist was Dr John Rowntree who joined the community for lunch. For the day Fr Alban brought a group from Cambridge which included the parish priest of Our Lady and the English Martyrs’ church in Cambridge. A few of the community were able to watch Archabbot Jeremias Schroeder’s zoom presentation to members of the English Benedictine Congregation on the subject of Benedictine congregational identity. Archabbot Jeremias is president of the Sankt Ottilien congregation.

» On 22 November, a meeting of the abbey trustees and abbot's council meeting was held. On the same day Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth came to spend a few study days at Douai.

» On 24 November, Fr David Smolira SJ chaired a second plenary discernment day at Douai for the whole community.
