Douai Abbey: The Monastery of St Edmund, King & Martyr
Published by HSK in News · 19 October 2020
»  A number of the community, both resident and non-resident, had their birthdays this week, and for some of them Sarah Hill, our cook, baked special cakes.

» As of last night the resident community began to take the usual Sunday supper of sandwiches in the calefactory, taking advantage of the wood fire there in preference to the relatively bleak refectory. This will become the practice for the duration of the cold months.

» On 12 October, Br Aidan Messenger made his third perseverance. The same day the community discussed future plans for the guest department and the implementation of safeguarding restrictions in the current pandemic.

» The EBC superiors’ meeting, which was to have been at Douai, was Zoomed instead between 13 and 15 October and, amongst other items, discussed the pope’s new encyclical Fratelli Tutti.

» The abbot has begun to transfer the extensive collection of philosophy and other books of Fr Louis O’Dwyer, who died in March, to the monastery library.

» Fr Oliver reports that the gravestones for the three brethren who have died in the past year have been engraved. May they, and all our departed brethren and friends, rest in peace.
