Retreat, Requiem & More

Douai Abbey: The Monastery of St Edmund, King & Martyr
7 September 2021
» Last week the monks of Douai had their annual retreat at the monastery. It was led by Bishop David McGough, retired auxiliary of Birmingham and a scripture scholar. He was a gentle and fatherly presence among us.

» At the end of the retreat, on Friday 3 September, the community celebrated the Covid-delayed requiem Mass for Frs Louis and Bernard, who both died last year in the middle of the lockdown. About 100 family, friends, old boys and parishioners came to remember them and pray for them. You can see footage of the requiem by clicking here.

» After the requiem Fr Abbot travelled up to the north-west where he joined a "meet-and-greet" drinks reception in the presbytery garden on Saturday, before the next day inducting Fr Hugh as parish priest of Scarisbrick at the morning Mass. They both joined Fr Godric at Ormskirk for a couple of meals.

» Last night the resident community farewelled Fr Alban who moves today to Fisher House in Cambridge to take up the position of chaplain of the university.

» As is the custom, a new status list of the monastic community was issued by Fr Abbot, and an updated community list can be found on the Our Monks page.

» Fr Peter has issued an initial offering for the monastery's pastoral porgramme until the end of 2021, As we emerge from restrictions the pastoral programme can slowly begin to take its former shape.
